Who We Are

The Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network was established in 1988 to rescue and rehabilitate injured, orphaned, or oiled wild birds and small mammals. The non-profit organization operates under permits (pdf file) from the California Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Moren than 4 ,000 wild animals are treated by the Network each year and more than half are successfully rehabilitated and released. The Network operates a care center In the Fairview Shoppign Center in Goleta, Ca (just of the Fariview Exit of Highway 101). Small birds are cared for at this location while other animals are treated at the homes of several volunteers. Many of these animals are brought to the Network from veterinarian offices or city and county agencies, such as Animal Control and Harbor Patrol. Most come from the public via the Network's telephone Helpline (805-966-9005). Volunteers are dispatched to rescue or retrieve injured wildlife based on tips from the public.

Most of the animals treated are injured or sick because of human-related causes. These include disturbed nests, fish hook or fishing line injuries, impact with cars, shootings, cat attacks, or ingestion of toxic substances. Baby birds, born during the spring and summer, are especially vulnerable.

The animals are fed special diets and given medication and vitamins as needed. Baby birds and mammals are hand-fed, sometimes around the clock. Raccoons, squirrels, and chipmunks are among the small mammals that also receive care.
